ITINERARY
Day 1: Touchdown in Ulaanbaatar Welcome to winter in Mongolia! Upon your arrival at Chinggis Khaan International Airport, your dedicated Avantour guide and driver will be waiting to provide a smooth, warm transfer to your premium hotel in the city center. Settle in, rest up, and acclimatize to the crisp winter air before your snowy adventure begins tomorrow.
Travel Time: 1 to 1.5 hours drive
Day 2: Flight to the North & The Frozen Blue Pearl Skip the long winter roads with a quick morning domestic flight to Murun, the gateway to the untamed North. From there, board your winter-ready 4x4 for a scenic drive to Khuvsgul Lake. In winter, the lake transforms into a massive expanse of deep blue ice bordered by frost-covered pine forests. You will spend the night at Toilogt Camp in specially insulated, winterized cabins kept warm by continuous heating.
Travel Time: 1.5 hours flight + 2.5 hours drive
Day 3: Deep into the Darkhad Depression Today, you drive deep into the remote Darkhad Depression towards Ulaan Uul. The winter landscapes here are cinematic—vast white valleys and dramatic, snow-draped mountain passes. By afternoon, you will arrive at your wilderness haven, Jargant Lodge. Designed specifically for the cold, this premium outpost features excellent insulation and heating, allowing you to shed your heavy winter gear and relax comfortably indoors.
Travel Time: 5 to 6 hours drive (off-road winter trails)
Day 4: The Winter Taiga & The Reindeer Nomads Embark on a specialized winter drive deep into the taiga to find the winter encampment of the Tsaatan (Dukha) nomads. Experiencing the reindeer now is magical, as the animals boast their thickest, most impressive winter coats. Spend the day interacting with the herders and warming up inside their traditional teepees with hot milk tea. After a thrilling day in the icy wild, return to the absolute comfort, hot showers, and reliable warmth of Jargant Lodge for a hearty dinner.
Travel Time: 2 to 3 hours total drive
Day 5: Wilderness Serenity at the Frozen River Take a slower pace today to truly absorb the quiet beauty of the winter wilderness. Your guide will lead you on a crisp winter walk to explore the frozen Jargant River. Enjoy the stunning ice formations and the pristine, untouched snow. Afterward, retreat back to the warmth of Jargant Lodge to relax by the fire, read a book, or simply enjoy the snowy views from your window.
Travel Time: Minimal (local exploration and walking)
Day 6: Return to the Blue Ice of Khuvsgul Say goodbye to Ulaan Uul and drive back toward the spectacular shores of Khuvsgul Lake. The shifting winter sunlight creates dazzling reflections on the massive ice blocks pushed against the shore. You will have the afternoon to safely walk across the thick, transparent blue ice before returning to your pre-heated cabin at Toilogt Camp for a hot meal.
Travel Time: 5 to 6 hours drive (off-road winter trails)
Day 7: The Great Khaan & Alpine Granite Peaks Leave the deep north behind and drive to Murun for your morning flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Upon landing, bypass the city entirely and drive directly to the Chinggis Khaan Statue Complex, admiring the massive 40-meter monument shining against the snow. Continue into the alpine valleys of Gorkhi-Terelj National Park and check into the Terelj Mountain Lodge. This high-end retreat features modern central heating and panoramic windows, letting you enjoy the rugged, snow-draped granite peaks in total warmth.
Travel Time: 2.5 hours drive to Murun + 1.5 hours flight + 2.5 hours total drive to Terelj
Day 8: Departure from the Winter Steppe Your winter steppe adventure concludes with a final hot breakfast at the mountain lodge, taking in the crisp alpine views one last time. Your driver will then provide a smooth, pre-warmed transfer directly from Terelj to Chinggis Khaan International Airport for your comfortable journey home.
