Among Mongolia's Tsaatan Reindeer Herders
Apr 20, 2025

The vastness of Mongolia has always held a special allure – a land of endless skies, enduring nomadic traditions, and a profound sense of wildness. At Avantour Travels, we have the privilege of sharing this magic, and our Reindeer Tour offers a particularly unique chance to connect with one of the world's most distinct cultures: the Tsaatan people. This is the story of a recent journey, an unforgettable week spent immersed in their world.

In Sep 2024, our adventure began the moment we head north from Ulaanbaatar. Flights take you closer, but it's the overland journey from Mörön where the real exploration starts. Our group travelled in our trustworthy Russian minivan – a sturdy UAZ, affectionately known as a "Bukhanka" – perfectly suited for the rugged tracks. These vehicles are legendary for their capability, and ours proved its worth not just for us, but for others too! Along the way, we even had the opportunity to help another group of travelers whose minivan had gotten stuck in mud. It was a spontaneous moment of teamwork and a reminder that adventure often brings unexpected connections.
Leaving the city far behind, the scenery shifts dramatically to rolling hills, then dense forests, the crisp air carrying the scent of pine. As we journeyed deeper, we had the wonderful opportunity to stay overnight with a welcoming nomadic family. This wasn't just a stopover; it was a genuine glimpse into their traditional way of life on the steppe, a chance to share stories and experience their incredible hospitality before continuing our journey further north the next day.

Reaching the remote Tsaatan communities often involves travelling by horseback, embracing the traditional and most sustainable way to navigate this terrain. Ascending into high pastures, sometimes lightly dusted with snow even in September, the scenery becomes truly majestic. We believe these authentic travel methods enhance the connection to the land. Simple moments, like our local partners preparing a delicious riverside lunch, become cherished memories, deeply tied to the environment we explore.

Arriving in the heart of the Tsaatan community feels like stepping back in time. The reindeer, central to their existence, roam freely, setting the rhythm of daily life. It's a place of profound serenity. As part of Avantour's commitment, we work closely with the community to ensure our visits are non-intrusive and respectful.

The real magic lies in the immersion into daily life – a core part of the Avantour experience. Our travellers get to observe (and sometimes participate in!) activities like milking, learn about the intricate relationship between the Tsaatan and their reindeer, and understand how these animals provide sustenance, transport, and cultural identity. Gathering inside a traditional ortz (teepee) in the evening, sharing stories over warm, salty reindeer milk tea, fosters genuine connection. The warmth of the hospitality we help facilitate is as memorable as the breathtakingly clear, star-studded night sky.

Beyond the daily rhythm, it's the human element that leaves a lasting impression. Seeing the children's effortless connection with the reindeer, listening to the quiet wisdom shared, and feeling the deep sense of community reminds us of what truly matters. Facilitating these respectful cross-cultural connections is fundamental to our mission at Avantour Travels.

The journey back towards Mörön and Ulaanbaatar brought a sense of reflection. Gazing back at the serene landscape, after a peaceful night in a ger camp in beautiful Terelj National Park, our travellers (and indeed, our team) left with a feeling of gratitude and a changed perspective.

A week with the Tsaatan, experienced the Avantour Travels way, is more than a trip; it's a deep cultural immersion handled with care and respect. It’s a powerful reminder of the beauty in simplicity, the importance of preserving unique traditions, and the strength of human connection. If you're seeking an authentic, responsible, and truly transformative travel experience, we invite you to consider joining us. It’s a journey that will stay with you.
